Monocacy Health Partners Center for Breast Care Welcomes New Physician

Monocacy Health Partners Center for Breast Care—a local leader in providing total care, not just for the breast cancer patient under active treatment, but for women who’ve completed treatment and those at high risk for developing breast cancer—is pleased to welcome Christine Kathryn Harris, MD, to the oncology team.

Dr. Harris is a fellowship-trained breast surgeon specializing in nipple-sparing mastectomies and a unique kind of reconstructive breast surgery that removes the cancer while also preserving and rebuilding the breast for a natural look.

“During my training, which includes a breast surgery fellowship in Annapolis, I focused on all aspects of the multidisciplinary management of breast cancer patients,” says Dr. Harris. “I hope to bring continued, excellent care for our breast cancer and benign breast disease patients to Frederick and the surrounding area.”

A native of Maryland, Dr. Harris returns to the state after years of training in Virginia, where she completed her general surgery residency at Virginia Commonwealth University and performed her preliminary general surgery internship at the University of Virginia. She earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, and Society of Surgical Oncology.

In addition to her extensive training, Dr. Harris specializes in multiple forms of breast care and surgery, including:

  • Axillary lymph node dissection
  • Hidden scar breast surgery
  • Nipple-sparing mastectomy
  • Oncoplastic breast surgery
  • Partial breast radiation
  • Prophylactic mastectomy
  • Sentinel node biopsy

Under the care of fellowship-trained breast surgeons Dr. Susan Bahl and new physician Dr. Harris, the Center for Breast Care is the only practice in the area that enables women who undergo mastectomies to opt for immediate breast reconstruction—the Center has the ability to offer both implant and DIEP flap reconstruction. Many centers are unable to offer these options, but the Center for Breast Care does.

Working closely with the community’s most respected plastic and reconstructive surgeon, the Center’s breast surgeons can offer a single stage solution, when appropriate. This is just one more way that the Center addresses all of their patients’ needs.
