Fall is flu season. Have you had your flu shot yet?
While flu vaccine effectiveness may vary year to year, flu vaccines provide
important protections against the flu. In fact, they prevent millions
of illnesses and flu-related doctors’ visits each year. From 2016-2017,
the CDC reports that flu vaccination prevented an estimated 5.3 million influenza illnesses,
2.6 million influenza-associated medical visits, and 85,000 influenza-associated
Flu vaccines work by causing antibodies to develop in the body about two
weeks after vaccinations. These antibodies protect against infection with
the viruses found in the vaccine. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against
the influenza viruses that researchers indicate as the most common during
the upcoming season.
A flu shot is the single best way to protect you and your loved ones against the flu.
Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine every flu season,
with rare exceptions. Flu prevention is especially crucial for people
with a high risk of developing serious flu complications and other health
factors that increase your risk.
The CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine by the end of October each year.
