About Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer occurs when there is an uncontrolled growth of cells in the
breast. These cells typically create a tumor that can feel like a lump
in the breast, or is visible during a screening x-ray. This tumor is cancerous
if the cells grow into surrounding breast tissue, or spread to other areas
of the body.
While women are more likely to get breast cancer, it does occur in men.
Breast Cancer Symptoms
The most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. A cancerous
mass is likely to be painless and hard with irregular edges.
Other symptoms include:
- Breast or nipple pain
- Skin irritation or dimpling
- Redness, scaling, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin
- Nipple discharge or retraction
Being aware of changes in your breasts can aid in the early detection of
breast cancer.
