We have exciting news! We’re expecting… an upgraded Birth Place, due early 2026. In the next few months, we will be welcoming five brand-new labor and delivery and post-partum patient rooms to Frederick Health Hospital, followed by a phased refresh of our existing patient rooms.
Frederick Health Hospital cares for more than 2,400 families each year in our Birth Place. These improvements demonstrate our commitment to our growing community, by providing a modern and comfortable design that conveys safety, support, and expert care.
Improvements have already begun! By relocating offices and conference rooms, we’ve expanded our triage area from 4 to 6 stretchers, making room for our growing community.
The Big Announcement: 5 New Rooms
Our Birth Place expansion adds five new patient rooms designed to improve comfort, access, and continuity of care. Three of these five new rooms let families experience labor, delivery, and recovery all in one space. These combined rooms allow families to stay in the same room throughout the entire birth experience without needing to transfer.
By adding five new rooms to our existing nine labor and delivery rooms and 27 family center rooms, we aim to reduce wait times for patients scheduled for induction, ensuring families can begin their birth experience without delays.
With direct involvement from the Frederick Health Labor and Delivery Team, the new patient rooms are thoughtfully designed to be efficient and family-centered, giving families the reassurance and space they need to welcome their newest addition.
The rooms will have new state-of-the-art equipment with modern technologies, meeting the latest standards in care. One of the new rooms will feature a labor tub, not used for birthing, but to reduce pain and provide a comfortable and relaxing environment during labor. We are also working on increasing the number of wireless fetal monitor units to provide patients with options when it comes to the style of monitoring.
Refresh of Existing Rooms
Just like a baby’s nursery gets fresh paint, new décor, and extra love, our existing patient rooms are getting a makeover too. Over the course of the project, we’re refreshing all of our rooms to be more comfortable, modern, and welcoming for growing families. These new spaces are designed to support a calming and safe family birth experience. With improved layouts, soothing colors, and modern finishes, the refreshed rooms will give families a space to feel comfortable. All our rooms offer a private experience for those first-time snuggles.
Our phase approach to updating existing rooms will ensure that our community’s access to care remains uninterrupted. We look forward to completing this multi-year project and delivering a better experience for our patients.
What Does this Mean for Families
Frederick County is the fastest growing county in Maryland, and with that growth comes a need for more accessible family-centered care. Our efforts to expand the labor and delivery unit are designed to reduce waiting times for incoming patients and grow alongside our community providing families with the comfort and support they need during life’s most important moments.
What's Next
This renovation is just the beginning. After the completion of the expansion and refresh of rooms, we will focus on refreshing our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Frederick Health Hospital provides Level III NICU care in partnership with Johns Hopkins Neonatologists.
