Laboratory

The lab is equipped with leading-edge technology and analyzers, offering comprehensive testing in the specialties of hematology, chemistry, microbiology, histology, cytology, and blood banking. The lab’s analyzers and information systems interface with the Hospital’s main computer system and results are accurately transmitted to the Hospital’s inpatient units and, in many cases, directly to physician offices in a timely and effective manner. Frederick Health Laboratory is licensed by the State of Maryland and is accredited by the College of American Pathologists to fulfill all laboratory testing regulations of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Frederick Health's Laboratory team consists of professionals operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide quick and accurate test results.

Following are brief descriptions of some of the services offered by the lab:

  • Hematology: The study of the cellular components of the blood, including white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Common tests are the CBC and the H&H. For example these tests can indicate infection, anemia, or malignancy.
  • Chemistry: The study of the serum or plasma of the blood. Common tests include glucose, cholesterol, potassium and creatinine. They can indicate diabetes, renal disease, heart disease and other metabolic abnormalities.
  • Microbiology: The study of bacteria and viruses in the body. Cultures of blood, urine, throat or wounds are performed to detect infections and determine the best treatment plan.
  • Blood Bank: Blood typing and other tests are performed to “crossmatch” patient’s blood with donor blood for surgery or transfusion.
  • Urinalysis: Analysis of physical, chemical and microscopic analysis of the urine.

The Laboratory Team

The collection, testing and results-reporting of specimens is a team effort of many professionals in the laboratory including:

  • Pathologists - Physicians specializing in laboratory medicine, surgical pathology and cytology who interpret and diagnose the changes caused by diseases.
  • Phlebotomists - Professionals who are trained to take blood samples and other specimens from patients.
  • Medical technologists - Clinical laboratory scientists educated and trained to analyze samples to produce accurate and reliable test results.
  • Cytologists, Histotechnologists and Pathologist Assistants - Trained to process surgical and cellular specimens, and to assist with the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases.
