Frederick Health’s Dr. Maurice Smith Honored as Physician of the Year by The Daily Record

Frederick Health proudly announces that Dr. Maurice Smith, Thoracic Surgeon and Medical Director for Chest Surgery with Frederick Health Medical Group, has been named a recipient of the 2025 Physician of the Year Award by The Daily Record, a leading publication recognizing excellence in Maryland’s healthcare community.

The Physician of the Year Award honors Maryland doctors who demonstrate outstanding leadership, commitment to patient care, and dedication to advancing the health and well-being of their communities. Dr. Smith’s recognition reflects not only his clinical excellence but also his unwavering commitment to the mission and values of Frederick Health.

Dr. Smith, who has served as a respected leader and surgeon within Frederick Health for over a decade, is known for his innovative approach to patient-centered care and for fostering collaborative, inclusive healthcare practices. He has helped to make Frederick Health a leader in robotic innovation and currently uses several robotic-assisted surgery platforms. In the last decade, physicians at Frederick Health have performed over 5,000 robotic-assisted surgeries. The organization was also the first healthcare system in the state to utilize the da Vinci 5, the most technologically advanced robotic-assisted surgery platform on the market. His expertise in robotic-assisted surgery has also led to Frederick Health being designated as a US Case Observation Site. This means surgeons from all over the county come to Frederick Health to learn the latest skills and advancements in robotics from Dr. Smith and his staff. In the last year alone, Dr. Smith and his team have performed nearly 500 lung cancer screenings.

His recognition by The Daily Record highlights his lasting impact on the Frederick community and the lives of his patients and colleagues.
