Before Your Exam:
You may have a preparation for your exam – you will be informed of
this when you make your appointment.
Dress comfortably- you may be given a gown to wear during your exam.
During Your Exam:
In the exam room, you will be instructed to lie upon the exam table either
on your back or side.
The technologist will first spread a warm water-soluble gel on your skin
over the area to be examined. The technologist will then press a transducer
(a handheld device attached to the ultrasound machine) against your skin
and move it back and forth to obtain the images.
After the procedure is complete, the technologist will wipe the gel off
of your body before you get dressed.
Depending on the area of the body being examined, the exam can take between
20 and 60 minutes to complete.
After Your Exam:
Technologists will be able to answer most questions that are not related
to the results of the exam. A board-certified radiologist will interpret
the images and provide a written report to your physician.
The technologist performing your exam will give you further directions
before you leave if needed.
You will be able to resume normal activities after your ultrasound exam.
