Too busy to remember birth control? Consider a long-acting reversible contraceptive
(LARC) instead. LARCs are the most effective forms of reversible birth
control. Methods include intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants; they’re
safe, effective, and can be removed at any time if you’re ready
to get pregnant.
Our doctors at Frederick Health Medical Group in Mt. Airy are trained in
LARC insertion and provide this service on a regular basis to our patients.
Keep in mind that LARCs do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases,
so be sure to use a condom to reduce your risk of infection during sex.
We’re changing the way our community thinks about women’s healthcare.
Our providers specialize in a number of women’s health needs, including
annual exams, LARC, mammograms, education and consultation, vaccinations,
screenings, and more. Meet our team of board-certified providers at Frederick
Health Medical Group in Mt. Airy who help make our women’s health
services possible.

What’s an IUD?
An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small device that’s inserted into
the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It’s long-term, reversible, and
one of the most effective forms of birth control available to women—more
than 99% effective.
IUDs prevent pregnancy by changing the way sperm cells move so they can’t
access an egg. If sperm can’t get to an egg, pregnancy can’t
occur. IUDs can last for years, but they’re not permanent. If you
decide to get pregnant or no longer want to have your IUD anymore, the
IUD can quickly and easily be removed.
Dr. Esame of Frederick Health Medical Group is certified to place IUDs.
The doctors will place a speculum into the vagina and use a special inserter
to place the IUD in through the opening of the cervix and into the uterus.
The entire process takes about 5 minutes. Some women experience cramping
or pain when the IUD is first placed, but it only lasts for a few minutes.
What’s Nexplanon®?
Nexplanon is a birth control implant that goes in your arm. It’s
more than 99% effective, offers up to 3 years of continuous pregnancy
prevention, and 100% reversible. The small, thin, and flexible contraceptive
arm implant is placed discreetly under the skin of your inner, upper arm
by your health care provider.
Nexplanon must be removed by the end of the third year and may be replaced
by a new implant at that time. Nexplanon is not an IUD because it’s
placed in the arm, not the uterus. But, like an IUD, it’s a long-acting
birth control option that puts a steady, low dose of hormone into your
bloodstream. It prevents pregnancy by stopping the release of an egg from
your ovary.
The implant can be removed at any time. To get Nexplanon inserted, schedule
an appointment with your healthcare provider today.
