Breast Interventional Procedures

Stereotactic Biopsy, Ultrasound Aspiration, Ultrasound Biopsy, and MRI Biopsy

A breast intervention (aspiration or biopsy) may be the recommended next step and we want you to have all the information and support needed. Caring staff are here to answer questions and help you. Your questions are welcome as they help better educate and inform you. Our team is here for you Monday-Friday, 8am – 4:30pm.

In our accredited facility the Board Certified Radiologists, technologists and nurses have many years of experience and we offer the most up to date services available.

Before Your Procedure:

  • You may eat and drink as usual
  • You can drive yourself
  • Wear a supportive bra
  • Do no use deodorant, perfume, body spray, lotion, or talcum powder
  • Bring your insurance Card and a list of medications and/or allergies
  • If you take blood thinners or anti-platelet medication, talk to your doctor before your procedure
  • Do not wear jewelry, hair clips, or anything metal
  • You will have an opportunity to speak with the Radiologist and Imaging Staff before your procedure. This is the perfect time to ask questions or express any concerns.

During:

  • The Radiologist will clean your breast and numb the area
  • A tiny incision is made and a biopsy needle inserted
  • Numbing medication is applied directly to the biopsy site
  • Small tissue sampled are removed and a small titanium market is placed at the biopsy site

After:

  • To reduce bleeding and swelling, compression will be applied to your breast
  • To treat the incision, your treatment team will use surgical tape and a small bandage
  • A gentle mammogram may be required to ensure the biopsy site is marked properly

Follow-Up Care:

  • Keep the area dry for 24 hours
  • No heavy lifting for 24 hours
  • Review provided written discharge instructions
  • For 4-6 hours after your procedure, apply ice to the area. We recommend alternating between 20 minutes with ice and 20 minutes without.
  • You will receive a follow-up call from our team to see how you are feeling. Please expect a call on the next business day following your procedure and approximately one week later.

Receiving Your Results:

  • Your referring provider will receive the results of your biopsy within five business days and will relay your results to you
  • If you do not receive your results within ten days, please contact your referring provider directly
