Computed Tomography (CT)

What to expect during your CT exam

Before Your Exam:

  • If you have an order from your physician, please bring it with you.
  • Dress comfortably and avoid wearing metal. You may be given a gown or shorts to wear during your exam.
  • You will be asked to complete one or more exam questionnaires. Please bring a list of medications.
  • Depending on the type of exam, you may be asked to arrive early to drink contrast. An IV may be required for IV contrast.

During Your Exam:

  • You will lie either head-first or feet-first on the exam table.
  • You may be asked to hold your breath during the scan.
  • The actual CT scan usually takes just a few minutes and is relatively painless.
  • The table will move in and out of the CT scanner while images are obtained.

After Your Exam:

  • Once the CT scan is completed you may resume your normal activities.
  • You will be given any special instructions after your exam.
  • Your CT scan will be interpreted by a board-certified radiologist and printed results sent to your physician.
